Getting to know your Baby
By Catarena Now Nov 11, 2020
A lot of times people will ask me why I go to the “do it yourself” car washes and not just pay someone. The reason is quite simple. I want to get to know my car. The quality time I spend with a bag of quarters and my car is a fun experience. What better way to get to know a new vehicle or an old one but with some TLC. When you pull up to the wash I like to start by the vacuum station. I take out my floor mats and slap those bad boys on the ground and set them off to the side. I will open my car doors and throw some quarters into the machine. I take the time to vacuum all of the crevasse and any area I can see or feel. I find loose change, old receipts, and things I might have lost.
After I vacuum the car, I always keep some cleaning spray in my truck and I will wipe down all the surfaces I can see. My baby is old so I tend to notice all the little dings and scratches that make her mine. I notice things that are broken that I might want to fix later or leave until it is absolutely necessary to replace. After I clean up the inside, depending on your own floor mats whether carpet or plastic you would put them into the car again or wash them with the car.
I usually at this point pull my car into the stall where you can power wash/foam and so forth any of those options that you want to do you can. I just usually do the scrubby foam option and power wash but, if I’m feeling lucky I might do the wax spray option. So I take my sack of quarters, throw some in, and start scrubbing my car. I really can see all my poor baby’s scratches and dents. I do a quick run through the wheels for fun (those really should be hand scrubbed). I normally keep a hand towel in my car to do each of those beforehand to say a little extra money. After I have made my rounds, I’ll switch to the power wash and just wash the pain away. I mean dirt, yeah washing the dirt and grime away. After the wash times out. I’ll check my fluids on the vehicle. Do a quick inspection of my car. If I have a friend with me I’ll have them run through my lights with me to make sure my brake lights, blinkers, headlights all work, no bulbs are out, and whatnot. Finally, after she is clean real good, I call it a day and head on with my life. If I notice anything really irregular I tend to make a mental note of it and might have a friend double-check me or even just fix the problem myself.
Our vehicles are our lives. A lifeline to work, school and to just get away. We should take care of them and they will take care of us.
